7)      Wed, Oct 19, 202212 PM - 1,30 PMOnline via ZoomResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Resilience and Inclusion in Academic ResearchThis particular RCR session examines the question “How does professional, personal, and scientific resilience lead to inclusion and ultimately more rigorous and responsible research?”. We approach this facilitated discussion by building a vocabulary of resilience and inclusion, sharing experiences of hardship and success, and connecting pitfalls with best practices. In doing so, we begin to examine our lived experiences, cultural upbringings, social landscapes, and extension of grace to others. Ultimately, we provide tools for monitoring the ebb and flow of resilience, and by extension creating an inclusive research culture, through framing resilience as a type of currency that can be earned, spent, saved, borrowed, lent, invested, renewed, and/or overdrawn.

This session will: 1) Provide you with tools to build self-efficacy and self-confidence, 2)Give you tangible examples to share when seeking advancement and leadership roles, 3) Show you how your stories bring to life your skills during interviews, 4) Enable you to identify when you are in flow state and/or feel a strong sense of satisfaction, 5) Help you to be more clear about which skills you most enjoy using, for charting your career progression
10)   Wed, Oct 26, 2022,1:00 PM – 2:30 PMOnline via ZoomThe Individual Development PlanThe Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a mentoring tool that links research goals with career development and progress towards independence. It is meant to foster an ongoing and recurring discussion that involves evaluation, goal setting and feedback with input from both postdoc and faculty mentor. The NIH encourages trainees to make Individualized Development Plans to help them prepare for academic and nonacademic careers. This interactive workshop unpacks the IDP framework while helping postdocs to prepare a working draft of the IDP that addresses research, professional progress, and implementation.

12)   Nov 2, 202212,30AM – 2PMArmenise building, Amphiteater roomResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Authorship and publicationFor trainees in the life sciences, few goals are as important as achieving first-author publication. Authorship is “the coin of the realm” in science. Ideally, we all agree that authorship confers credit and also generates accountability. The normative importance of both of these concepts for the research enterprise cannot be understated, and so it behooves us to reflect on how assignment of authorship should proceed responsibly.

By taking a hard look at the racial ideas of both northern and southern medical schools, Christopher D. E. Willoughby reveals that racist ideas were not external to the medical profession but fundamental to medical knowledge

The doctor who wasn’t there: Technology, Hystory, and the limits of TelehealthThe Doctor Who Wasn’t There traces the long arc of enthusiasm for—and skepticism of—electronic media in health and medicine. Over the past century, a series of new technologies promised to democratize access to healthcare. From the humble telephone to the connected smartphone, from FM radio to wireless wearables, from cable television to the “electronic brains” of networked mainframe computers: each new platform has promised a radical reformation of the healthcare landscape. With equal attention to the history of technology, the history of medicine, and the politics and economies of American healthcare, physician and historian Jeremy A. Greene explores the role that electronic media play, for better and for worse, in the past, present, and future of our health.

60)   Wed, Feb 15, 202312.30 PM – 2.00 PMOnline via ZoomResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Conflicts of Interest Today, no topic in a course on the responsible conduct of research seems as controversial as conflicts of interest. As a starting point, ask yourself: why is the issue so contentious? Why are opinions so strongly held? From the perspective of ethics: what human values are at stake? Our approach in this section, as in all others, is not to presuppose “right” answers. Rather, we expect you to approach this subject with the same intellectual honesty and rigor you would approach a scientific or clinical question.

In this webinar Dr. Turner will review the evidence for reporting bias in clinical trials, with a focus on antidepressants; examine whether the level of reporting bias shows signs of improving and, if so, what policy changes may have contributed; and offer solutions how the peer review process can be modified to essentially eliminate this problem.

69)   Fri, Apr, 6 20237.30-8.30 AMOnline via ZoomFinding the right treatment for the right people at the right time – promoting stratification in global mental health researchCurrent mental health diagnostic categories are imperfect, and rely on subjective measures, resulting in significant heterogeneity of people within each diagnostic category, which in turn impacts development and provision of effective interventions. Stratified medicine aims to identify sub-groups of individuals within a heterogenous disease population based upon unique characteristics of each sub-group (strata) such as underlying mechanisms, risk factors, course of disease or treatment responses. Join the WHO, Dr Pim Cuijpers and Wellcome Trust at this webinar to discuss WHO priorities, the importance of psychological and social markers for stratification in mental health and the latest Wellcome Trust funding opportunity on finding the right treatment, for the right people, at the right time for anxiety and depression. The talks and panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A.
Host: Dr Lynsey Bilsland, Head of Mental Health Translation, Wellcome Trust
Panelists: Dr Mark van Ommeren, Head of Mental Health Unit within the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Use
Dr Pim Cuijpers, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Dr Usman Hamdani, Research Lead, Mental Health Translation, Wellcome Trust
70)   Fri, Apr 7 202310AM – 12PMOnline via ZoomFriday Morning Seminar Culture, Psychiatry and Global Mental HealthThe discipline of Mental health in India is in moral denial about how the institution of Caste is a deeply rooted social pathology embodied in the Clinic. Textbooks don’t discuss this, and teachers and trainees are disabled by their identities to address this pervasive social sickness. Consequently, mental health professionals invest considerable effort in silencing themselves. This seminar details an open-ended clinical intervention guided by key tenets of liberation psychologies and the author’s journey through the corridors of oppression. During this intensive work, the therapist’s and his subject’s wounds spoke to each other. Their sense of social defeat blended into an alchemy of individual liberation and incremental growth in both therapist and subjects. As therapy progressed, it became evident that all subjects, the therapist included, were keen to liberate themselves from their perceived oppressive experiences. Sessions involved collaborative ways of creating ruptures, reclaiming agency and dignity and aligning with routes to social justice.

80)   Wed, May 17, 202312.30 PM – 2.00 PMOnline via ZoomResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Scientific CitizenshipScientific discoveries sometimes lead to applications that can have profoundly beneficial or disruptive effects on society and the evolution of social norms. The fact that we operate within a functional society where some degree of cooperation exists, suggests that most of us accept certain organization values/principles about relationships between individuals and between individuals, institutions, and authority. These values/principles are typically captured by inexact terms such as freedom, equality, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence. Of course, that we may abstractly agree on the list of fundamental ideals does not mean that we will agree on their relative priority in context. We recognize that, within this kind of conversation, there may be a wide range of reasonable, informed opinion. Our modest goal is to identify 1) some of the underlying values that animate such reasonable, informed opinion, and 2) some justifications that can be offered for prioritizing some values over others.

Session overview: They are strange experiences—a voice whispered on the wind, a god who speaks from on high—but far more common than we think. At the beginning of most great religions lies a voice. Who hears such voices?  I have spoken to hundreds of people, in many countries, who have heard voices, some only once, some more often. Most of these people are not psychiatrically ill. Some are. In this talk I will discuss what we know about the difference between mad voices and sane voices, and what traits and practices and cultural ideas make sane voices more likely. I will also talk about the evidence that the way we think about voices changes our experience of them—and may soften the impact of psychosis.

135)         Tue, 9 January, 202412.30 – 2 PMOnline via ZoomResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Research & Professional IntegrityIntegrity in life sciences research is publicly called into question most often when a spectacular case of fraud appears in the news cycle. Most academic scientists believe that serious instances of misconduct are rare and represent the actions of a few bad actors. While this intuition may or may not be accurate, its overemphasis serves to draw attention away from a host of “environmental factors” within traditional academic medical research that are worth closer examination – especially at the student/trainee/junior investigator stage.

137)         Fri, 19 January, 202412 – 1 PMOnline via ZoomSeminar: Investing in Fish Ponds and People: Navigating the Economic and Structural Challenges to Social MedicineWhy, in an impoverished setting, would you build a fish pond in a medical facility? Why not invest those resources in additional health care and generate more health? It is difficult to justify social medicine (yes, I think fish ponds are social medicine) on economic grounds as the interventions called for by social medicine are often not cost effective. Unless, that is, we start thinking about effectiveness differently; unless we start thinking about people differently. This requires both conceptual and structural shifts. Through a series of worked examples, I demonstrate the need for a conceptual shift from the maximization of aspects of human development in isolation - including the maximization of health - to facilitating human development more broadly; that is, to seeing and responding to the whole person. I then highlight how this shift is constrained by the way in which governments and international aid are structured, and ask how we could weaken, if not remove, these constraints. While focusing on addressing these structural constraints, I recognize that not everyone wants to see such changes, and combating their resistance may be the most difficult task. Lecturer: Chris Desmond
138)         Wed, 24 January, 20241 – 2 PMOnline via ZoomSeminar: Creativity, Connection, Happiness, and HealthThis timely talk by Dr. Jeremy Nobel will explore loneliness and social isolation as both a personal and societal challenge, including the accelerating impact of COVID on what was already recognized as public health crisis.  Building on the recent Surgeon General’s Advisory on Loneliness, and drawing on key frameworks presented in Dr. Nobel’s recently released book, Project UnLonely: Healing Our Crisis of Disconnection, the session will present a public health-oriented view of how best to make sense of loneliness and the societal scenarios and “territories” in which it most often arises, as well as strategies to navigate it successfully, scalably, and sustainably. A major focus of the talk will be the role of creative arts expression as a powerful tool in charting both individual and organizational paths forward to achieve better health, happiness, and well-being, accomplished by improving our sense of engagement and connection with others as well as with ourselves.
Jeremy Nobel, M.D., MPH, is a primary-care physician, public health practitioner, and award-winning poet with faculty appointments at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Medical School. It deconstructs myths and misunderstandings about the important role health professionals played in formulating, supporting, and implementing inhumane and often genocidal policies. Medical crimes committed during the Nazi era are the best-documented historical examples of medical involvement in transgressions against vulnerable individuals and groups.  Insights from this history are globally relevant for today’s perceptions of and debates in medical theory and practice, and should be discussed in all health curricula.

175)         Wed, 3 April, 202412 – 1.30 PMTosteson medical centre(HMS) – in presenceResponsible Conduct of Research (RCR): Research Data ManagementCutting-edge experimentation inevitably produces new types and/or greater quantities of data, and increasingly involves extensive networks of collaborators. This natural evolution of research is currently accompanied by a growing emphasis on open science, and on resolving instances of irreproducibility. All of these trends entail more robust approaches to data management, and funders and journals are beginning to emphasize curation and data sharing in ways that they previously have not.
Regardless of whether these changes are essential or burdensome (or both), data management and data sharing are playing a growing role in scientists’ abilities to fund and publish their research. This course will introduce these topics and discuss how they relate to legal and ethical matters, including intellectual property, the privacy of human research subjects, and the ownership of data.

193)         Thu, 25 April 20241-2PMOnline via zoomTransforming Behavioral Health Systems Through Measurement-Based CareGreenspace Health have announced a highly requested and anticipated educational Measurement-Based Care (MBC) panel, featuring three key leaders driving behavioral health transformation from within a leading accreditation body, across a national system, and within a managed care organization. As MBC adoption spreads rapidly within clinics, hospitals, large organizations, and health systems and National accrediting bodies like the Joint Commission recognize it as a foundational component of any high-quality and evidence-based behavioral health services, there is a need for industry education surrounding large-scale and system-level implementations. Hosted by Greenspace President and Co-Founder, Simon Weisz, the panel will feature Melinda Lehman, Executive Director of Behavioral Health & Human Services at the Joint Commission; world-renowned Applied Psychologist and leading global expert on MBC, Dr. David Clark; and Dr. Sandra Berg, Senior Director of Complex Health Solutions, Behavioral Health at CareSource. The panelists will dive deep on MBC, its relationship to value-based care, and share insights to inform any implementation. This is a conversation you won’t want to miss. Register now to join the discussion, as the panel of experts explore how MBC is revolutionizing behavioral healthcare systems across North America.

195)         Fri, 26 April, 2024 10 AM – 12 PMOnline via zoomSeminar: ““Fieldwork and the Clinic: The Role of Ecology in the Psychiatric Diagnostic Process.”Anthropologists and cultural psychiatrists have collaborated over the past few decades on formulating the concept of culture in psychiatry, which includes the study of meaning-making in the clinical encounter and the impact of societal structures on the development of psychiatric disorders. Recently, Neil Aggarwal has called for broadening “culture” to encompass the clinician’s culture of biomedicine and clinician practices. This presentation delves into these aspects by examining how context is folded into the psychiatric encounter in a clinical setting, with particular attention to the diagnostic process, which remains understudied. Based on ethnographic research among carriage drivers, one of whom became my psychiatrist patient in a shelter-based clinic, and drawing on anthropological work on how ecology shapes perceptions, I argue that the “psychiatric lens” encourages psychiatrists to perceive patients through a biomedical frame that is sustained by the clinical environment. Attending to how these “ecological factors” shape the diagnostic process may lead psychiatrists to new collaborative experiments beyond the DSM. Vincent Laliberté, MD, MA, is a psychiatrist based at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Canada. He is the director of the PRISM–Welcome Hall Mission, a clinic serving individuals experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness, located in a shelter. He is also a PhD candidate in anthropology at McGill University. He began conducting fieldwork with horse-drawn carriage drivers in Old Montreal as well as animal rights activists in 2018, shortly after the city of Montreal passed a bylaw announcing the abolition of this activity.

200)         Wed, 1 May, 20241 – 2 PMIn presence HSPHSeminar: “When does social media satisfy the need to belong? Loneliness and Digital Thriving“About the Seminar Has the rise of social media created the loneliness epidemic? Social media use is both a way to spend one’s leisure time and a form of interpersonal communication. Understanding its influence on loneliness requires a more complex understanding of why people use social media and whether it is capable of satisfying the need to belong. This talk will challenge common presumptions of the grave harm of social media and explore why (and for whom) legitimate concerns of its effects on loneliness remain. About the Speaker Dr. Jeffrey Hall is a Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas, and currently serves as Visiting Scholar at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at the Harvard Law School. Dr. Hall studies the interplay between online and offline communication in the context of personal relationships and social interactions. His 2020 book, Relating Through Technology (Cambridge University Press), received two Top Book Awards from the National Communication Association. His new book The Social Biome (Yale University Press, 2025) focuses on the importance of friendship, high quality communication, and making time for one another. He is the director of the Relationships and Technology Lab at the University of Kansas
